Mr. Ryan Thomas

Ryan Thomas is a proud 1998 graduate of Carbondale Community High School and happy to serve as the Principal of his alma mater. Mr. Thomas earned his bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University and his master's degree in educational administration from McKendree University. Mr. Thomas began his professional career at CCHS in 2008 as a special education teacher and coach. He moved into administration as assistant principal for one year before being named principal in 2018. Mr. Thomas helped guide CCHS through COVID-19 and the transition students and staff faced returning to the classroom following the pandemic. In 2026, Mr. Thomas was recognized as the Illinois Principals Association Shawnee Region Principal of the Year.
Mr. Thomas has played a key role in the implementation process on a variety of initiatives over the past few years including the addition of metal detectors at CCHS to ensure student safety, the cafeteria expansion, a new security entrance, and a new CTE addition. In addition, Mr. Thomas serves as a Goal Champion for key initiatives in the district's strategic plan focusing on student achievement, culture and climate, and staff satisfaction.
Mr. Thomas loves coming to work everyday and living the mission at CCHS of providing students a Personal Pathway to a Productive Future and also the CCHS motto that Every Student Matters, and Every Moment Counts.
Mr. Thomas is married to his wonderful wife, Vanessa, also an educator, and tries to keep up with his three daughters, Hannah, Lydia, and Ruby.
